Despite expectations, "S.W.A.T." and its star Shemar Moore will return for a seventh and final season. In a shocking announcement on Thursday, CBS renewed "S.W.A.T." for an eighth season in 2024–25, meaning the May 17 finale will now serve as a season finale.
"Here at CBS, we always'stay liquid' and love a good dramatic twist, especially when it leads to an eighth season of S.W.A.T.!," stated Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. "Our brilliant writers and producers, headed by the brilliant Shemar Moore, ensure that the show stays current and exciting, and the show's continued success is a testament to their talent."
In an Instagram post that included a fist and a muscle emoji, Moore wrote, "We did it again" to celebrate. "The dream continues because of YOU the Fans!!!!" In a video message to the "S.W.A.T." crew and actors, Moore delivered "the bad news": he will not be participating in the series finale running race.
"I want to save my body, so I can climb on tankers, and fly around in helicopters for 22 episodes!" Moore spoke to rousing cheers.
"S.W.A.T.," created by Shawn Ryan and produced by Sony Pictures Television, has seen more than one reversal. Originally, CBS decided to end the crime drama in May 2023 following Season 6.
Moore, who plays Los Angeles Police Department Sergeant Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, vented his frustrations on social media. "Canceling 'S.W.A.T.' was a huge mistake," Moore tweeted on Instagram. "Let's fight to bring it back."
Following a "outpouring of passion" from viewers, Reisenbach changed his mind about canceling the show and renewed "S.W.A.T." for a seventh season later that month. Season 13, which consists of 13 episodes, was originally intended to be the final one as well, concluding important dramatic plotlines.
In the statement from 2023, Reisenbach expressed his satisfaction with the show's return and the closure it provided to the show's plots and characters, something that viewers were entitled to.
