News organizations pressure Biden and Trump to debate.

A dozen national news organizations want the presumptive presidential nominees to debate before November.

The news outlets urged the candidates, without name President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump, to attend the independent Commission on Presidential forums forums in a joint statement Sunday.

In a joint statement, the group of news organizations, including NBC News, said it is too early to invite candidates, but it is not too early for candidates who expect to meet the eligibility criteria to publicly state their support for and intention to participate in the Commission's fall debates.

Both Biden and Trump have enough delegates to get their party convention selections.

The media noted the election's “exceptionally high” stakes, adding that “there is simply no substitute for the candidates debating with each other, and before the American people, their visions for the future of our nation.”

Last Monday, Trump's campaign called for additional presidential debates, starting “much earlier” than the commission's three set for Sept. 16, Oct. 1, and Oct. 9.

Johnson says Senate supplemental won't be considered despite pressure. The debates will be conducted at Texas State University in San Marcos, Virginia State University in Petersburg, and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

Biden's advisors told that the campaign won't decide whether to debate Trump until later this year. Last month, Vice President Kamala Harris told  that she had not discussed challenging his predecessor with the president and had not committed to a debate.
