In a recent development in Washington, — Donors to the Democratic Party paid for President Joe Biden's legal representation throughout the year-long special counsel investigation into his handling of sensitive materials, which cost over $1 million.
Although it is within the confines of campaign finance law and follows precedent, using party cash to pay Biden's legal fees could hinder his capacity to keep criticizing Trump for his far more widespread use of donor dollars to pay his legal bills.
Using over $100 million in donor funds, the ex-president has engaged in a complex web of legal battles, including an impending New York criminal trial related to hush money payments, continuing prosecutions regarding his involvement in the Capitol insurrection that occurred on January 6, 2021, and his defiance in turning over classified documents to the federal government following his departure from office.
Republicans have been underfunded and resources have been redirected from swing states to deal with the former president's legal affairs, which Biden's advisers and staffers have been criticizing Trump and for months.
"We are not spending money on legal bills or hawking gold sneakers," Biden campaign finance chair Rufus Gifford told MSNBC last week.
Typical campaign finance reports filed with the Federal Election Commission revealed the payments made to Biden attorney Bob Bauer and the law firm Hemenway & Barnes. The funds did indeed go toward the Biden study, according to two anonymous sources with knowledge of the situation. The payments were initially disclosed by Axios.
The source claims that the funds for Biden's legal team were transferred from the legal account of the Democratic National Committee. The bulk of the money for that account comes from wealthy individuals who have already contributed more than the federal limit allows for the party's political operations.
If these dishonest Democrats didn't have HYPOCRISY, they'd have NOTHING!" the Republican National Committee stated in a post on X on Friday.
