It's official: The Met Gala will be co-chaired by Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Anna Wintour of Vogue, as announced Thursday by the magazine and the museum.
Did I mention the dress code? "The Garden of Time," or whatever the heck that means to the A-listers who will be making their way up the museum's grand staircase on May 1st for the glamorous gala.
In keeping with the current spring exhibition at the Met's Costume Institute, the dress code for this year's gala on May 6 is themed accordingly. "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" is the topic for this year.
This has nothing to do with the fairy tale; rather, it is a reference to priceless clothing housed in the Costume Institute's extensive collection, some of which are too delicate to be shown upright. Just like Sleeping Beauty, museum curators will display them in glass cases.
Andrew Bolton, the Met's resident fashion show architect, revealed his search for a means to "breathe life" into the collection's 33,000 items—many of which have never been on display—during a November preview. He'll be arranging the 250 of them in a presentation centered on land, sea, and sky themes.
The majority of the Costume Institute's yearly budget is generated by the gala. According to the Met, the total amount raised for the event is over $223.5 million.
Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Billy Porter, and Rihanna are just a few of the famous faces that walk the red carpet in costumes designed for the specific theme of the evening, making it one of the most anticipated pop culture events of the year.
Bad Bunny has attended the event for three years running, while Hemsworth is making his debut. Both Lopez and Zendaya have appeared on the guest list multiple times. Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, CEO of TikTok, are honorary chairs. The gala is sponsored by TikTok and Loewe. The scheduled dates for the exhibit's run are May 10–September 2, 2024.
